With the expansion of terminal facilities, terminal building land-side and air-side infrastructure, Cayman’s Owen Roberts International will double in size and in the amount of passengers it can comfortably handle. Once the terminal is complete, it will have capacity for some 2.5 million passengers.
JEC are working alongside U.S.-based design firm RS&H, local architects Chalmers Gibbs and AMR Engineers on the new CI$55-million airport expansion. The new building will be constructed in four phases, allowing the airport to stay in continuous operation throughout the project. The new building will have more than 200,000 square feet and triple the space for public areas in the terminals, a new air conditioned indoor waiting area for arrivals, and more space for retail and food vendors. The upper floor will include expanded retail and restaurant concessions. The completed terminal will contain much larger departure and arrival lounges, as well as expanded immigration and customs areas and additional check-in gates.
The Cayman Compass reported in October 2018 The food court will include dining options by Wendy’s, Subway, Island Taste and The Brew Hut, the Cayman Islands Airports Authority said in a press release. Retail and duty-free shopping will be provided by Kirk Freeport, Last Chance Island Souvenirs, Bodden Freeport, Tortuga Rum Co., Jacques Scott, Island Jewellers and Churchill’s Cigars, the statement added.
